Lara was established in the 1850s after the railway line between Geelong and Melbourne was built.
The township has had several names in its history the first was Kennedy’s Creek, others include Duck Ponds, Hovel’s Creek and Lara Lake until it was finally renamed to Lara. The population flourished to a few hundred by 1890 and several facilities were built including schools and churches, the town water did not extend to the town until 1947.
Situated just 55km south-west of Melbourne’s CBD, Lara is perfectly positioned between Melbourne and Geelong so you’re on the doorstep of many possibilities. There is plenty on offer only being a short distance to Geelong’s waterfront, You Yang Mountain range and on route to the iconic Great Ocean Road.
There are several transport options including buses, trains and roads in Lara connecting the township to Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Lara has ample great schooling options from kindergarten to primary and secondary schools. For further education there is Deakin and Victoria University campuses that are no more than a 30-minute drive.
Labelled as a designated growth region, Lara’s future developments include community infrastructure and sporting grounds, resulting in more job opportunities for locals too.
The Lara Museum and Historical Center opened in 2013, the site was originally built as the Lake Bank Hotel in the 1860s. The museum is volunteer run, who organises exhibitions and maintain the grounds. Open Wednesdays and Sundays from 11am to 4pm.
Formerly a busy goldmining township featuring hotels, shops, churches and community of over 1,000 people, today Steiglitz is almost a ghost town. Make sure you visit the Steiglitz Court House, with its display of photographs, maps and relics of the gold year open on Sundays and public holidays. There are fantastic spots to have a picnic and several tracks from the town centre to explore!Â
Explore the You Yangs region via bike or foot, the choice is yours. Featuring distinctive granite peaks, including Flinders Peak and Big Rock which have panoramic views out to Melbourne. Ride over 50km of purpose-built bike trails for learners or experts. Take a short stroll or a lengthy distance, with trail options for all levels of fitness and ability.
